Dr. Avallone Marcello founded the BARIATRIC CENTER “NewLife-Bariatric” at the High Specialty Clinic Institute “International Clinic Ars Bio Medica” (Via Luigi Bodio 58 – Rome) and a further office at the “Studio MedicoM” Clinic (Via Ippolito Nievo 12 – Rome). The center, aims to welcome the obese patient, supporting him in the approach to his pathology and advising the most suitable treatment. It can be surgical or non-surgical according to the needs. For this reason, many Specialist works in the Center and collaborate with Dr. Avallone to guarantee an high standard of assistance.
But what does Obesity and Overweight means?
To diagnose these two conditions and implement an adequate therapeutic strategy, It is used a value called Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI takes into account the weight and the height of the patient. This data must be correlated with the patient’s BioImpedenzometric analysis which accurately establishes the body composition.
Pathological obesity is a morbid condition often underestimated, but responsible for comorbidities related to it that reduce the patient’s life expectancy and quality of life. There are 22 million overweight people and 6 million obese patients just in Italy. So, it has been necessary creating a center dedicated to those who suffer from Obesity and related diseases: diabetes, dyslipidemia, osteoarticular pains, hypertension, heart disease, obstructive sleep apnea, etc…
Obesity is determined, both in adults and children, by the interaction of several factors – some of a genetic type and others of an environmental type. Among the latter, we mention the incorrect diet, characterized by foods with high energy value and low satiating power, poor physical activity and increasingly sedentary habits.
Bariatric Surgery (Laparoscopic Gastric Banding Positioning, Laparoscopic Gastric Plication, Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, Mini Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass, Roux en Y Gastric Bypass Laparoscopic, etc.) has the objective of restoring the patient to a normal life, in the most common sense of the term . The surgical procedure is performed under laparoscopy and general anesthesia.
The obese patient must be treated holistically, taking into consideration all the elements that condition and characterize his life, thus offering the most suitable treatment: diet therapy, ingestible intragastric balloon (Elipse) or surgery.
The multidisciplinary approach in preoperative and postoperative (Psychologist, Nutritionist, Endoscopist, Pulmonologist, Endocrinologist, Sonographer) is the basis for the success of any type of treatment that is reserved for the obese patient. This is why the Bariatric Surgeon must collaborate with other professional figures to obtain the best care for the patient, even in the long term.
For a complete analysis of the patient, before submitting it to any surgical treatment, the following assessments are recommended:
- Nutritional visit with BioImpedenzometria
- Psychological examination
- Gastroscopy
- Pulmonological examination
- Abdominal ultrasound and thyroid ultrasound
- Cardiological examination
- Blood exams
- Thorax X-Ray
- Anesthesiology Evaluation
